Heritable Disease and Sperm Donation

JAMA. 2010;303(7):617-619. doi:10.1001/jama.2010.123

To the Editor: Dr Maron and colleagues1 described the genetic transmission of HCM from an affected sperm donor to multiple recipient offspring and argued for more effective screening strategies to reduce the risk of donor-associated heritable disease. In an accompanying editorial, Ms Daar and Dr Brzyski2 advocated for creation of a voluntary registry of gamete donors to identify and warn offspring of possible genetic risks. Both articles called for greater regulatory oversight of gamete donation by the US Food and Drug Administration in the interest of public health.
