Varmus to Head NCI

President Obama has named Harold Varmus, MD, Nobel laureate and former director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), as the new director for the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The NCI director is appointed by the President; Senate confirmation is not required.

Varmus headed the NIH between 1993 and 1999. During his time there, Varmus revamped the research programs at the institutes and helped secure a doubling of the NIH budget over 5 years. Since 2000, he has served as the president and chief executive officer of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, where he has overseen the construction of new academic and clinical facilities and the creation of new graduate degree programs in emerging areas of science. Varmus also cochaired President Obama's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.
