Low maintenance is what I aspired to as a new physician. My second-favorite scene in When Harry Met Sally is when Billy Crystal informs the opinionated Meg Ryan that although she pretends to be low maintenance, she is in fact high maintenance. I was pleased to conclude that I must also be low maintenance: I was a surgery resident in a county hospital, dressing in scrubs and avoiding time-wasters like makeup and fluffy hair. I never craved expensive sports cars because I knew they needed constant tinkering, and my ideal house would never need redecorating.
