Chasing Medical Miracles narrates the author's personal journey through a clinical trial. Alex O’Meara has type 1 diabetes mellitus and signed up for an islet cell transplant. He was hesitant at first but then, encouraged by clinicians and others, agreed to undergo the therapeutic maneuver. Although initially successful, the transplant eventually failed and the author was catapulted back to his pretransplant condition, despite his having weathered the consequences of the trial-related surgery, complications, and procedures, as well as the breakup of his marriage owing to the pressure of chronic stress and disappointment.
