If health care reform is to succeed, nurses must be allowed to play a greater role both as caregivers and leaders, according to an Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, released in October. In light of growing demands for access to high-quality health care, the report calls for more effective use of the nurse workforce and improved training for nurses. It also recommends that more nurses participate in leadership roles, such as serving on hospital boards and government panels.
