I heard him pacing in the dark of the bedroom. It was a tough night for him, my adrenaline-fueled husband, now desperate for sleep before the big examination, the one he’d spent the last year and a half studying for. Restful sleep was not to be—he was more than awake. I sighed, having a flashback to my own sleepless nights with four babes through the years, the ones I tried to console so as not to wake their dad, the sleep-deprived internal medicine intern getting a few precious winks at home, then the neurology resident trying get some shut-eye, in later years, the doc on call finally asleep after a tough emergency. On this night, the irony was not lost on me: he was taking the sleep medicine boards in the morning and he could not sleep.
