So impressed were Franz Marc and Wassily Kandinsky with the work of the young Heinrich Campendonk (1889-1957), when August Macke first brought it to their attention in 1910, that they invited him to Sindelsdorf in Upper Bavaria to work and exhibit with them in their avant-garde movement Der Blaue Reiter. The radical group, which along with Die Brücke (JAMA cover, May 13, 1998) would revolutionize modern German art, took its name, according to one account, from negotiations between Kandinsky and Marc: whereas Marc liked horses, Kandinsky liked riders; fortunately, both liked blue: hence "The Blue Rider." With Marc, Kandinsky, Macke, and Campendonk, the group's membership was rounded out by the Swiss painter Paul Klee (JAMA covers, January 3, 1972, February 1, 1985, and February 12, 1988).
