THE OLD ADAGE "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" is one that the National Institutes of Health's (NIH's) Office of AIDS Research (OAR) and its new director are taking to heart.

The OAR, the entity that sets the scientific agenda for all AIDS research conducted or supported by the NIH, is placing a new emphasis on research for a vaccine and other preventive strategies aimed at curbing the spread of HIV, said Neal Nathanson, MD. During a recent interview in Bethesda, Md, Nathanson, a viral epidemiologist who assumed the directorship of the office on July 1, described his vision of how the $1.73 billion NIH-funded research effort should be directed.
