An estimated 100 000 Medicaid patients received an antimicrobial drug in 2007 that may have been inappropriately prescribed, according to researchers at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
Using data from the 2007 Medicaid Analytic Extract files for patients aged 21 years or older from 40 states who were diagnosed during a physician visit with an acute respiratory infection, the researchers examined records to determine which patients received an antimicrobial drug prescription and filled it within 4 days of the visit.
