One injection of recombinant fibroblast growth factor 1 (rFGF1) restored healthy blood glucose levels in obese diabetic mice for more than 2 days in a recent study (Suh JM et al. Nature. doi:10.1038/nature13540 [published online July 16, 2014]).
Previous research has shown that FGF1 injections have no effect on healthy mice, but in this latest work, a series of injections with rFGF1 increased insulin-dependent glucose uptake in skeletal muscle and suppressed liver production of glucose to achieve whole-body insulin sensitization.
