This issue of THE JOURNAL reflects many of the numerous research and
clinical advances that have occurred in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention
of cardiovascular disease and, at the same time, provides a window on many
issues that will challenge the cardiovascular research community in the years
to come. Clearly, the understanding of cardiovascular disease is progressing
rapidly and the resulting scientific opportunities are so abundant that continued
progress will bring new benefits to patients.
