Promoting Prevention

Working with physicians, the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) is putting the old saying that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure to work for millions of seniors and Americans with disabilities.

Mothers and physicians have always preferred prevention to treatment. Policy makers are finally figuring out that it works and are beginning to take down barriers that discourage preventive care.

Medicare is now covering more preventive tests and services and eliminating patient charges for some of the most important of them. Medicare now covers the following preventive strategies for specific diseases:
