The more than 140 works reproduced in the above collection, most in fabric and thread, include a substantial number of portraits of the elderly. The artist writes, "As the aging face has become my most significant subject matter, it gives me particular joy to make the elders and the mentors more visible and accessible. Images of aging have the power to influence social change by aesthetically and psychologically challenging ageism." The above work is from "The Last Year," a series of nine works depicting a woman during her final year of life. "Surrounded by Family and Friends," works that evolved from "The Last Year," will be exhibited at the Brattleboro Museum and Art Center, Brattleboro, Vt, May 15-August 29, 2001.
