Opportunities for Medical Research in the 21st Century

JAMA. 2001;285(5):533-534. doi:10.1001/jama.285.5.533

The ongoing revolution in biomedical science is of an unprecedented magnitude, is accelerating dramatically, and promises almost unlimited opportunity for the betterment of humankind. It is the nature of this revolution and the promise for its impact on health that is the focus of this issue of THE JOURNAL—namely, to survey the current state of development of several critical areas of biomedical science and to project the potential application of these developments for the relief of suffering and disability, and for reducing mortality. The underlying goal is to forecast major advances in medical research likely to occur in the first quarter of the 21st century that will contribute significantly to the prevention, treatment, and eradication of disease.
