The new edition of the estimable "DeVita" is at hand and amounts to a one-volume encyclopedia of basic and clinical research on the complex disease we call cancer as well as an exhaustive analysis of the various clinical entities. A new edition appears about every five years and incorporates progress during the interim. But in a disease for which research findings and clinical discoveries seem to change almost daily, it seems to this reviewer that no single text (or set of volumes) can be other than a work in progress. This work, replete with references, is just about out of date on publication. But, to combat oncologic obsolescence, the editors deliver monthly updates via Internet subscription as well as published progress reports.
