In early April, the nation's top infectious disease researchers
reassured the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions committee
that they were working with international colleagues and doing
"everything possible" to understand, contain, and treat severe
acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).
"We are taking it very seriously," said Julie Gerberding, MD, MPH,
director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in
