Driven by the correctly perceived importance of the departmental chair in medical schools and the lack of attention to the selection, roles, and needs of department chairs, the Association of American Medical Colleges has compiled a manual of good practices. The manual is based not just on medical school surveys but also on reviews of procedures in other institutions of higher education, industry, and business and on interviews with various leaders. The idea is not to "lay out a bureaucratic formula" but rather to lay out a "conceptual inventory" or a "propositional index," which the authors do by providing examples of "good practices worthy of emulation in higher education and in the corporate world as well as by synthesizing current medical school practices."
