Sugar may sweeten the prospects of improving the shelf life of platelets,
according to new research by an international team of scientists from the
United States, Sweden, and Denmark (Science. 2003;301;1531-1534).
Currently, platelets must be stored at room temperature; they are discarded
after 5 days because they lose their blood-clotting ability and because room-temperature
storage encourages bacterial growth .
