While 50 million individuals in the United States have persistent pain,
few physicians have any substantive formal training in diagnosis and treatment
of the condition.
Most medical students do not take a single course focused on pain treatment,
according to the American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM). Although content
about pain is present in the curriculum, the information is taught in a fragmented,
rather than a coherent, comprehensive fashion, note educators.
