This is a handsomely produced volume of 53 superb reproductions of paintings
and drawings that reflect the physician's role in society, especially the
relationship between doctor and patient. The book is not a coffee table decoration
but, rather, a scholarly work that provides a broad overview of the practice
of medicine from the 13th to 21st centuries. The illustrations give a taste
of what medicine was like, an impression difficult to convey in a standard
textbook history of medicine.
