"Poverty screeches and screams," writes Raymond Downing, "but something
behind it is singing." After spending most of his life confronting poverty's
scream and trying to discern the singing behind it, Downing shares an account
of his journey in The Wedding Goes On Without Us. This
volume is actually two related books: the first, a narrative describing the
trajectory taken by him and his wife, Janice Armstrong, both physicians, from
rural Appalachia through rural East Africa; the second, Bury Me Naked, stories of and dialogues with individuals he has met
in the course of his African life.
