Rubens saw it at the last moment, end over end, rotating
in slow motion.
The puck looked harmless as it deflected off his glove. But it hit him
full in the face above his eye. He felt a sharp, bright pain. He took off
his glove and his fingers went into the open space. Blood spilled down his
face. He had trouble seeing from his left eye.
His teammates skated to him and told him to stand still.
A few seconds later the buzzer sounded. Rubens cupped his hand to his
eye. The blood dripped through his fingers. He pressed hard to stem the bleeding.
