In an age of hand-held devices, CD-ROMs, and continuously updated Internet databases, is the medical textbook obsolete? A medical text competing against the glut of electronic information must excel in several ways: it must contain specialized material, not readily found elsewhere; the depth of scholarship must be superior; the authors must be leaders in their fields; and exceptional effort must be made to have the literature survey up to date at the time of publication.
