The connection between medicine and the humanities is the unifying theme
of this collection of essays based on lectures given at the annual meetings
of the American Osler Society. Founded to commemorate the life, work, and
ideals of renowned physician, medical educator, and medical historian Sir
William Osler (1849-1919), the society has each year since 1986 sponsored
a talk by a prominent medical educator, historian, philosopher, or writer.
Recently, 18 of these lectures were edited and collected into this volume.
