This year’s elections also offered health-related ballot measures
in 8 states. According to the Kaiser Daily Health Policy
Report (http://www.kaisernetwork.org), voters in California
approved Proposition 71, which promises to raise, through the issuance of
general obligation bonds, an average of $295 million annually for 10 years
to promote stem cell research, by a 59% to 41% margin. The measure will provide
funding for a new stem cell research center at a University of California
campus and offer grants and loans for laboratory projects at other universities
and colleges in the state.
