Since its initial publication more than 30 years ago, Youmans Neurological Surgery has been considered the bible of neurosurgery, comprehensively addressing both scope and practice. The recently released fifth edition continues in the tradition of excellence of the previous four as an all-inclusive text. It is massive—the four-volume set encompasses 335 chapters, approximately 3100 illustrations, and a high-quality CD-ROM containing neurosurgery images. The current edition is in the able hands of new editor H. Richard Winn, MD, professor of neurosurgery at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, NY, who with 18 section editors has successfully undertaken the long overdue update of this high-caliber reference.
