Old men are always young enough to learn with profit.
—Aeschylus, Agamemnon

The first thing that I observed when I received the 39th edition of this great book was the change in subtitle from The Anatomical Basis of Medicine and Surgery to The Anatomical Basis of Clinical Practice. I agree with this change, because Gray’s Anatomy should belong not only to physicians but to all health professionals.

This weighty volume is not only an edition but a multimedia “e-dition” package that includes the full textbook, two CD-ROMs, and an accompanying, continuously-updated Web site. These features are a tremendous benefit for the student, since our institutions teach anatomy for only 3½ months. Continued atrophy of anatomical teaching can lead only to the production of medical scientists who are unable to practice medicine.
