To the Editor: Goodman et al created “twenty
myths” about single-payer programs, and in the book Lives at Risk: Single-Payer National Health Insurance Around the World,1 they proceeded to dispel all of them while maintaining
that the US health services system needs reform to increase market competition.
In a highly laudatory review, Dr Orient,2 from
the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, supported the position
of the authors and cited several statistics from the book to buttress the
argument. These statistics are not consistent with other information.
