The authors of a new study on long-term disability in stroke survivors hope their findings will help medical, rehabilitation, public health, and insurance leaders to better design and finance programs to assist these patients.
In an article appearing online in PLoS Medicine, researchers from England and Germany found between 20% and 30% of stroke survivors have a poor range of outcomes up to 10 years after a stroke. The finding is based on data from the prospective, population-based South London Stroke Register documenting all first strokes from January 1, 1995, in a multiethnic inner-city population (Wolfe CDA et al. PLoS Med. 2011;8:e1001033).
