Book and Media Reviews Section Editor: Harriet S. Meyer, MD, Contributing Editor, JAMA.
In The Heart Speaks cardiologist Mimi Guarneri shares her professional and personal observations on present-day health care. She strongly reiterates the well-known fact, often forgotten in specialty medicine, that the body works not in parts but rather as a unit whose parts are strongly interdependent and in which the malfunction of one affects the function of the others.
The Heart Speaks considers how mind affects body, especially the heart, not only in how the patient experiences symptoms but also in producing pathology and disease. Therefore, the author argues, physicians should treat not just diseases and organs, but the whole person.
