HIV/AIDS in China

JAMA. 2006;295(11):1239. doi:10.1001/jama.295.11.1239-c

About 650 000 individuals are now living with HIV in China and the epidemic is growing, with 70 000 new infections occurring every year, according to a recent report by the Chinese Ministry of Health and United Nations agencies.

While about 80% of all estimated HIV infections in China are related to injecting drug use and commercial sex, the epidemic is spreading from high-risk groups (including drug users, sex workers and their clients, men who have sex with men, and partners of people living with HIV). In some areas, the HIV prevalence rate among pregnant women exceeds 1%.
