The death of a patient at an Oregon physician-owned specialty hospital has focused the Senate Finance Committee's attention on these institutions.
Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R, Iowa) and ranking-member Sen Max Baucus (D, Mont) are asking the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Inspector General and the Government Accountability Office to review the quality of care, patient safety records, and financial arrangements at physician-owned specialty hospitals. Such reviews will help the committee to determine the effects specialty hospitals have on patients, community hospitals, Medicare, and Medicaid.
