Erectile Dysfunction and Incidence of Cardiovascular Disease

To the Editor: Most patients with a chronic thyroid disease experience some sexual symptoms, including erectile dysfunction.1 In their study, Dr Thompson and colleagues2 found a significant association between erectile dysfunction and subsequent clinical cardiovascular events, but it does not appear that they considered the potential effect of thyroid disorders. Because patients with thyroid disease may have an increased cardiovascular risk,3-5 the presence of thyroid hormone disorders might have confounded their results.
