Shock and awe are mostly missing from the suspense novel The Mephisto Club, despite the book's attention-grabbing ingredients—an enigmatic organization devoted to the study of evil, cryptic messages, and a high body count.
After his father dies of a stroke, 15-year-old Dominic Saul agrees to live with his uncle's family in the small town of Purity, NY. Dominic is a creepy kid, but apparently the only character who recognizes his malevolent personality is his 16-year-old cousin, Lily. Before long, three members of Lily's family perish tragically. Her father, Dr Peter Saul, commits suicide. Her mother stumbles down the stairs and breaks her neck. Lily's 11-year-old brother drowns. Lily and Dominic soon drop out of sight.
