The latest estimates of health insurance coverage for the US population, based on data from the January through March 2006 National Health Interview Survey, indicate that 42.4 million individuals of all ages (14.5%) are uninsured, 53.4 million (18.2%) have been uninsured for at least part of the past year, and 29.5 million (10.1%) have been uninsured for more than a year (http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nhis/earlyrelease/insur200609.pdf). For children and adolescents younger than 18 years, 9.3% were uninsured in the first 3 months of 2006.
