Legislators are seeking answers about the death of a patient in a physician-owned specialty hospital—a facility that opened despite a moratorium put in place by Congress on such openings. (Specialty hospitals offer a limited range of medical procedures and focus care on specific patient populations.) The incident is similar to one last year that prompted Senate Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R, Iowa) and ranking member Sen Max Baucus (D, Mont) to send letters to the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Inspector General and the Government Accountability Office to review quality of care provided at specialty hospitals (Mitka M. JAMA. 2006;295:1635).
