Book and Media Reviews Section Editor: John L. Zeller, MD, PhD, Fishbein Fellow.
This is Volume 174 in the Recent Results in Cancer Research series. It contains the written version of topics presented at the Fourth International Conference on Cancer Prevention held in February 2006 at St Gallen, Switzerland. This update divides loosely into 7 sections, each with several chapters.
“Genetic Risk Profiles and Biomarkers” ranges from discussion of clinical trials to problems with cyclooxygenase 2 inhibitors in animal model chemoprevention studies. The Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial, Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT), Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene (STAR), and Alpha-Tocopherol Beta Carotene Cancer Prevention Study are discussed in this first section. Another chapter shows that genetic variations in DNA repair mechanisms have cancer risks. These chapters are for serious researchers and for designers of clinical trialsand assume that the reader has at least basic knowledge of molecular biology and cancer genetics. This is most easily seen in the illustrations. They also assume a working knowledge of the major ongoing clinical trials and their designs.
