A Piece of My Mind Section Editor: Roxanne K. Young, Associate Editor.
When I was a counselor at a summer camp for children with life-threatening illnesses, the first thing the campers wanted to know was “Do you have it?” “It” could be anything from a transplanted kidney to Crohn's disease, depending on the week, but I was a healthy 27-year-old premedical student who didn't know much about illness, except that any person in her right mind would not want one. As the summer unraveled, however, a very peculiar thing started to happen—a part of me wanted to answer “Yes.”
