Proposals by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to close some field laboratories responsible for ensuring food safety and to outsource jobs to private companies have some House Democrats up in arms.
On August 17, facing legislation introduced to block the closures and after Rep John Dingell (D, Mich), chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, expressed concerns, the FDA reversed its decision on closing the field laboratories. Dingell, along with Rep Bart Stupak (D, Mich), chairman of the House Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, then focused on the job outsourcing.
