Kerry Weems, deputy chief of staff for Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt, was named acting administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on September 5 by President George W. Bush. He replaces Leslie Norwalk, who left the CMS on July 20.
Weems was nominated in May to become the permanent CMS administrator, and a confirmation hearing before the Senate Committee on Finance was held in July. But the Senate has yet to schedule a confirmation vote.
