Sabiston Textbook of Surgery: The Biological Basis of Modern Surgical Practice

JAMA. 2008;299(14):1722-1723. doi:10.1001/jama.299.14.1722

This is the 18th edition of a surgical textbook published by W. B. Saunders, initially under the editorship of Dr Frederick Christopher beginning in 1936 and continued in 1956 by Dr Loyal Davis. In 1972, Dr David Sabiston reedited these works, which he continued to edit for several more editions as the Davis–Christopher Textbook of Surgery: The Biological Basis of Modern Surgical Practice.

The present text is the third edition for which the editorial board has been led by Courtney Townsend. It presents a full in-depth understanding of surgical disease. Not only is this edition the most extensive and inclusive of any of the previous editions, but it goes into areas into which few surgical textbook contributors have ventured.
