It was in the heady days of the early 1900s in Paris where art history was being made that Jeanne Rij-Rousseau (1870-1956) joined the ranks of the audacious Cubist artists. As part of the conversational hum at Le Dôme and other cafes in Montparnasse, icons of abstract art and other culturati could gather to exchange ideas. In this lull before the looming firestorm of 1914, the cool rationality of Cubism allowed objects to be seen as fascinating multidimensional forms. In Rij-Rousseau’s works, her imaginative use of color also conveyed a sense of celebration of life.
