The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has established a formal collaboration with the African Union Common to create the African Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (African CDC), which aims to help African countries monitor public health, respond to public health emergencies, and address health challenges (http://1.usa.gov/1H0DL2N).
The need for an African CDC was first discussed at the 2013 African Union Special Summit on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria in Abuja, Nigeria.
