Abstract

Differential diagnosis is obviously one of the most important phases of medical practice. It demands a broad knowledge of numerous diseases. In the review of the second German edition of Matthes' textbook, The Journal recommended an early English translation because of the systematic, concise presentation and the completeness. The English edition is made from the fourth German edition, bringing the literature quite up to date. Moreover, the translators have added to the sections on influenza, circulatory diseases, roentgen-ray diagnosis and chronic appendicitis, so as to give full value to recent American observations in these fields. The additions by the translators and editors of this volume make what was, in the German edition, a superior book, in the American edition, a superlative one.
