—In answer to the communication by Elser and Stillman, we wish to submit the following data, which have been stressed in our recent article on the "Prevention of Chills Following Transfusion of Citrated Blood." Our paper refers mainly to the various factors which were found from experience to be of extreme importance in the prevention of chills following transfusions. In our hands single distilled and doubly distilled water were found to be ineffective in the prevention of chills for citrate transfusions. The best results were obtained only with triply distilled water.We have also stressed the importance of the preparation of the instruments in the central supply room, the slow infusion, and the mutual tests prior to transfusions.The problem concerning the use of intravenous saline solution and dextrose is somewhat different.
