Abstract

In this, the tenth edition of the original book by L. Emmett Holt, Sr., extensive changes have been made. The sections on nutrition and nutritional disorders, the deficiency diseases, and diseases of the blood and diseases of allergy have been completely rewritten, as have also many other sections. New articles have been added on chemical relations in childhood, immunology, serum diseases, burns, lead poisoning, dwarfism, encephalitis and many of the infectious diseases. Several contributors, in addition to the two authors responsible for the text, have contributed the sections on various subjects, so that the work more nearly approaches a system of pediatrics than a volume representing the views of one authority. The first edition of this work, as explained by Dr. E. A. Park, was an event in the history of pediatrics in this country, for it codified and defined this subject and separated it clearly from general medicine. The
