To the Editor:  —I was greatly surprised to read in the Bucharest letter (The Journal, September 2, p. 792) that the number of abortions registered in statistics is about 60,000 a year. I will not discuss the figure, although my associates and I are the only ones in Rumania who could be well aware of the actual number. I have no idea as to the number of abortions that take place here. Two expressions of a contradictory nature—"secret abortions" and "late statistical reports"—are used by the correspondent.The causes of death registered according to the International List give the following data for 1931 and 1932:
