President Obama has nominated Robert Califf, MD, the FDA’s current deputy commissioner for medical products and tobacco, to head the agency (http://1.usa.gov/1QfSARj). If confirmed by the Senate, Califf will succeed Margaret Hamburg, MD, who stepped down as commissioner last March.
A recognized expert in cardiovascular medicine, health outcomes research, and health care quality, Califf held a variety of positions at the Duke University School of Medicine and its medical center for more than 3 decades. He served as vice chancellor of clinical and translational research and was director of the Duke Translational Medicine Institute as well as a professor of medicine in the division of cardiology.
