The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded $35 million to 5 research centers to study the safety of natural products and how they work in the body, as well as to develop new research technologies to assess chemical and biological properties of natural products such as dietary supplements, fish oil and omega-3 fatty acids, and probiotics (https://nccih.nih.gov/news/press/09092015).
The NIH’s Office of Dietary Supplements and National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health jointly fund the 5 centers, which comprise 3 centers that conduct research on botanical dietary supplements and 2 centers that focus on advancing natural products innovation and technology.
