I have read with considerable interest the article by Dr. M. E. Barnes entitled "Applied Epidemiology in a General Hospital" in The Journal, Nov. 23, 1940, page 1757. Anticipating Dr. Barnes's ideas, the Bronx Hospital in New York has had an epidemiologist since December 1933. The pioneer work in this field was done at this institution and has proved a most valuable asset.
